The Move

Ok, so here is what happened when I moved from Indianapolis to Hollywood.

A couple of weeks before I left, I had a hitch installed on my car to pull a trailer to California. U-Haul installed the hitch. I also asked them to put a transmittion cooler on my car, so my car wouldn't overheat as I drove. U-Haul told me that I didn't need a cooler put on, because there was already one on my car. Now, what I didn't know was that Ford installs coolers on all their cars, but they aren't big enough to cool a transmittion that was hauling a trailer. At least not the ones that they put on the '96 Taurus.

So, two hours into the trip, in Effingham, IL, my transmittion went out. White smoke started coming out of the car, and when I got out, the fluid was all over the ground. I put my car in Drive, but it wouldn't go. So I called AAA to haul my car, and I called U-Haul to tow the trailer to the nearest U-Haul. When I spoke to the lady at U-Haul, I told her that I needed to get a Truck and dolly to carry a car the rest of the way to California. She told me that she would send someone to get my trailer, and they would be there in 20 minutes. This was at 4:30 pm.

When we got the trailer back to the U-Haul, it was 5:15 pm. U-Haul was closed. The lady was gone, no one was there. The tow-truck guy didn't know how to set up the rentals, so we were stuck there till U-Haul opened the next morning at 8.

So we got there the next day, and got a truck that cost $1,258. I had Lou, a friend from Indianapolis, come get my car the next day. U-Haul then charged us $55 for the tow of the trailer from the night before.

So that was at the beginning of June. I found out from Lou that the only problem with my car was that the transmission overheated. The car runs fine now. I have been talking to U-Haul for a month and a half to try to refund us the $1,258, since I wouldn't have had to get the truck if they had put the cooler on when I asked them to.

I was finally able to get a hold of the Vice-President of the region, and he told me that they would not refund the money. But I called them everyday for a month and a half.

Finally, and July 8th, they refunded the money. All of it. The $1,258 truck and the $55 tow. So basically, except for gas, we moved from Indianapolis to California for free.

So, back in June, I posted a Blog called "Hard to Get" when I didn't understand why things were happening the way they did. But now I know.

There is more that happened, and as soon as I figure out why, I will post that.

Psalms 1
1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,or stand around with sinners,or join in with scoffers.
2 But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants;day and night they think about his law.
3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper. (emphasis mine)

  • Much sympathy from me, man. I had an awful experience with U Haul about a year ago. It wasn't nearly as bad as yours, though. When you were stranded in Illinois, did you have to get a hotel? Did they reimburse you for that as well?

  • No. But we only got a hotel for one night. Since he got a truck, we both drove, and we took turns. So we drove straight through without having to get another hotel room. So that saved us some money too.
